The Sandbox Scene

IMG_0075 A well-planned sandy area at a park is a great place for baby to explore. There are endless possibilities and only one rule to remember: don’t throw sand! While baby is practicing digging, filling, and pouring, she also will have opportunities to watch other baby playing. Baby’s first attempts at socializing outside the family just might occur in the sandbox. Some useful items for sandplay include:

  • Shoebox to fill and dump
  • Frozen juice containers for filling and making towers.
  • Sand shovel, spoons, ice cream scooper
  • Measuring cups
  • Variety of vehicles and plastic figures

Make a hill of sand with baby. Pat it down all around, then, starting at opposite sides, dig through trying to reach each other’s hands. Play hide-n-seek with toy animals by burying them under the sand, then trying to find them. Smooth out an area of sand and make hand and footprints. Dig a hole and fill it with water, then watch the water disappear. If the weather is warm, bury each other’s feet.
